This is the age-old capital of the near-mythical ancient Dwarf civilisation, the "Pinnacle of Mountains," the "Most Enduring." It is the first, most powerful and largest of their holds, containing within its halls the history of their people carved in stone. Karaz-a-Karak - Karaz-a-Karak simply translates as "Everpeak" in Khazalid, the tongue of the Dwarfs, although the name holds a much greater significance to their kind.At present, the Dwarfs still rule nine major holds and countless smaller kingdoms, which comprise the totality of the Karaz Ankor. However, the Dwarfs' pyrrhic victory in the War of Vengeance, as they call the War of the Beard, combined with the vast destruction of the Time of Woes and the onslaught of the Goblin Wars, resulted in the loss of several Dwarf holds and hundreds of smaller settlements and mines. At its peak, the Dwarfen kingdom encompassed nearly the entirety of the Worlds Edge Mountains, in addition to settlements maintained in the Grey and Black Mountains and many smaller hill settlements in the lands of what would later become the Empire. The Dwarfs' original homeland was located in the mountains of the Southlands, but they migrated northwards in search of new veins of precious metals and gems to mine, gradually settling in the Worlds Edge Mountains of the Old World. The Karaz Ankor, which in the Dwarf tongue means " The Everlasting Realm" or " The Mountain Realm" as the Khazalid word for mountain and extreme durability are the same, is the name for the entire empire comprised of all the subterranean Dwarf holds located in the Worlds Edge Mountains that the Dawi have inhabited since the earliest days of their recorded history.
